Obituary

Emily Bittenbender-Henry (Freddie), 90, of Huntington Mills, passed away Friday, September 26th, 2026 at her home.

Born in Harrisburg on December 13, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Iber and Emily (Snyder) Bruner.

After graduating from Lower Paxton High School, she went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Pennsylvania. It was while working as a nurse at the Harrisburg Polyclinic Hospital that she met her husband of 32 years, Joseph B. Bittenbender, MD and they would be married in 1959. The couple and their four children would live in Mechanicsburg until returning to the family farm in Huntington Mills in 1976.

During her time in Harrisburg, Freddie would serve as President of the Junior League and play an important role in overseeing a number of community projects. Following the death of her husband in 1991, she served as a founding board member of the Berwick Health and Wellness Foundation and continued to be active in the community. Additionally, Freddie was a wonderful cook, world traveler, and avid contract bridge player, which she enjoyed with local friend groups. She was also a longstanding member of the Thursday Club. The role, however, that was most important in Freddie’s life was being “Grammy” to her beloved grandchildren- Tommy, Matthew, Danielle, Glen, Caroline, Emma, Alec, and Teddy.

In addition to her parents, Emily was preceded in death by her first husband, Joseph B. Bittenbender; her second husband, Frank M. Henry; her sister, Carol Bruner; and her son-in-law, Frank Martin.

She is survived by her children, Joseph C. Bittenbender, Barbara Anne Martin, Emily Louise Bittenbender, and Fritz Bittenbender as well as daughters-in-law, Catherine Herbert and Heather (Schleicher) Bittenbender. Additionally, she is survived by four great grandchildren and two nieces.

Funeral services will be held privately at the convenience of the family.
