Obituary

James L. Nelligan, 97, of Moore, SC., formerly of Harveys Lake, passed away Tuesday, October 6th, 2026 at Spartanburg Hospital

Born February 14, 1929, in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Leo and Mary (Gansel) Nelligan.

James graduated from Coughlin High School and King’s College with a B.S. in Accounting. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the occupation of Japan immediately after the end of WWII, before beginning a career in public service that ultimately led to his election to represent the Pennsylvania 11th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives. Jim also served as Deputy Secretary of Revenue under Pennsylvania Governor Richard Thornburgh and The Governor’s Representative in Washington D.C. before retiring from public service.

Throughout his life, Jim was guided by a strong sense of duty, integrity, faith, and patriotism. He valued the opportunity to serve others and remained deeply proud of his Pennsylvania roots. While his professional life was distinguished by public service, his greatest source of pride and happiness was always his family and his love of Notre Dame Football.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jean K. Nelligan, with whom he shared a lifetime of love and treasured memories. He is survived by his son, James C. Nelligan, Moore, SC; daughter-in-law, Joanne L. Nelligan, Moore, SC; and twin grandchildren, Rachel A. Nelligan, Moore, SC; and Ryan P. Nelligan; Philadelphia, PA.

Jim will be remembered not only for his years of service to his country and community, but also as a devoted husband, loving father and father-in-law, and proud grandfather. His legacy of love, faith, patriotism, and service will live on through his family and all those whose lives he touched.

Funeral will be held privately at the convenience of the family with interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Township.
